2009 LATINO HERITAGE parade and jamaica IN PASADENA
“Like the Stars in the Sky”

Pasadena, CA – Pasadena celebrates Latino heritage and culture at the 11th Annual Latino Heritage parade and jamaica on Saturday, October 3, 2009.  Kids and families can learn how the Mayans and Aztec used the stars to create some of the world’s earliest calendars. The event begins with a parade and leads to the jamaica (pronounced ha-my-ca) as traditional community fairs are called in Spanish. The jamaica, at Pasadena’s La Pintoresca Park and Library, features arts and crafts, music, dance, exhibits, and Latino food.
Leading the parade as grand marshal is KCET-TV journalist Val Zavala. Mauricio “Wicho” Valdez, Pasadena’s first Latino Firefighter, is the community grand marshal.

Jet Propulsion volunteers will lead interactive exhibits on the properties of the stars and the very beginnings of astrophysics.  La Pintoresca Library will feature exhibits that highlight American astronauts of Latino descent.

The parade and jamaica are sponsored by Latino Heritage, a volunteer organization that promotes cultural events and educational opportunities that create bridges between communities and generations while sharing the arts, culture, heritage and history of Latinos in Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley. The Latino Heritage parade and jamaica is underwritten by private donations and sponsors.
